My design approach always includes these questions

Note: I used to showcase a linear design process earlier in my career, but that’s just not how businesses operate in reality. Instead, here are a few high-level questions I use to frame where we are in the process and to decide how to move the team forward.

01 //

Do we understand the problem?

What problem are we trying to solve for and why? Is it a user, customer, or a business need?

02 //

Are we aligned on the desired outcome?

What do we actually want to achieve? Are we all working towards the same outcome?

(note: this is the step that is often missing when teams experience churn for too long and don’t get anywhere)

03 //

What level of confidence are we at with the proposed solutions?

What do we need to do in order to get to higher confidence?

04 //

Did we achieve the desired outcome?

How do we know? If we did, how can we optimize our solution? If not, did we misinterpret the problem or create the wrong solution to the correct problem?

Kind notes from leaders and peers
